Description
Godwins is a detached house located on the High Street in Berwick St. James. The core of the building dates back to the mid-17th century, and it was altered in the 18th century. Constructed with alternating bands of flint and limestone, it has a tiled roof and brick stacks. The house presents a gable end to the road and is two storeys and an attic with a three-window front. It features sash windows, including a central 6-panelled door flanked by 12-pane sashes with yellow brick dressings and segmental heads. The first floor has three 2-pane sashes. A left return displays a 3-light ovolo-mullioned casement window with a hoodmould on the ground floor, and similar windows on the first floor and in the attic. A late 18th-century rear wing, representing a rebuild of an earlier outshut, has a 9-pane sash to the left return and 2-light casements to the rear, the central one featuring a keystone, alongside a triple hipped roof with a brick dentilled eaves cornice. Internally, the house retains deep chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. Notable features include a mid-18th century eared fireplace and doors with two fielded panels on the first floor, late 18th-century service rooms with doors featuring four fielded panels, and an early 19th-century door with a reeded surround and paterae.
