Description
The K6 telephone kiosk in Berwick St James was designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. Made from cast iron and glass, the kiosk has a square plan and a domed roof. Each side features a segmental upper structure with a crown in relief above a glazed panel that displays the word "TELEPHONE." The windows and door have margin glazing bars.
This design has become iconic, with around 11,000 kiosks produced. The K6 telephone kiosk is designated as Grade II due to its significance as an example of industrial design, showcasing Scott's Neoclassical adaptation for modern technology. It also has a strong visual relationship with the nearby Grade II listed Clock House and contributes to the group value of other listed buildings in the area.
