Description

Magna House is a detached house dating from the mid-17th century, with an extension built around 1700. The original part of the house is constructed with a chequered pattern of flint and limestone, while the later extension is of rubble stone. The roof is covered in 20th-century concrete tiles, and there are brick stacks. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The ground floor has a four-panelled door with a flat wooden hood supported by brackets, positioned centrally. To the left of the door are two 3-light casement windows, and to the right, one. The first floor has three wooden 3-light casement windows. The eaves were raised around 1700 when the extension was added to the south. The right side of the house has coped verges and a brick stack, with some stone remaining. A blocked attic window is visible on the right return, whilst the left return features a recessed chamfered casement window with one light. The interior was inaccessible during a survey in August 1985, but records from the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM) indicate a deep chamfered beam and an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on stone jambs in the original 17th-century section. The north room of this section was refitted in the late 18th century, featuring a fielded overmantel with a cornice and pilastered recesses with cusped ogee-headed fronts and shaped shelves. A first-floor planked door with a wooden latch was also noted.
