Description

The Pembroke Arms is a building dating from around 1800, possibly designed by James Wyatt. It is believed to have housed some of the workforce involved in his alterations to Wilton House. The structure has three storeys and is constructed of gault brick, set on a round-top projecting plinth, with flat eaves and a hipped slate roof.

The south-west front features three bays, with two square windows flanking a semi-circular central window on the second floor. On the first floor, there are two three-pane windows with deep segmental hoods and radiating glazing, alongside a similar five-pane central window. The ground floor has two similar five-pane windows flanking an eight-panelled door, which is topped by a false radiating fanlight and set beneath a deep porch supported by two Doric columns. The porch also has two wall pilasters that support a broken frieze, a dentil cornice, and a curved dentil pediment roof, with panelled reveals.

The south-east front has two bays, with square windows on the second floor, three-pane segmental radiating windows on the first floor, and similar five-pane windows on the ground floor. There is a later wing with a modern ground floor extension to the north-west and a tall two-storey extension at the rear.

Inside, the building has been altered but still retains urn friezes on the ceilings, a contemporary staircase with a curled rail on the bottom step, and an Adam-style fireplace in the lounge bar.
