Description
Nos 1 and 2, Cowage Cottages are two cottages that are believed to be part of a larger house that was demolished. They date from the 17th century and are constructed of rubble stone with a stone slate roof. The cottages are two storeys high with an attic.
The rear wall features a massive stack and a ridge stack. The front of the cottages has a four-window range with a gable on the left side, which now has casement windows on each floor. To the right, there is a two-window range with two-light stone ovolo-moulded mullion-and-transom windows that have hoodmoulds; the upper pair is intact, while the ground floor door and two-light window with transom have been removed. The right bay contains a door with a two-light 17th-century timber mullion window above it.
At the rear, there is a similar two-window range of mullion and transom windows with hoodmoulds in the center. The left bay has a blocked door with a pair of casement windows beneath a moulded lintel, while the right bay features a two-light timber-mullion window on each floor, and a chimney gable projects to the right. Inside, the ground floor south end room has a stone fireplace with a moulded shelf and a finely moulded beam.
