Description

Taylor's Almshouses, located on Bedwin Street, were originally built in 1594 and were rebuilt in 1886, likely following the old design. The building is two storeys high, constructed of red brick with a raised stone plinth. It features bold chamfered stone quoins and a moulded stone string course at the first floor cill and window head level. The roof is tiled, and there is a central Dutch gable with moulded coping and stone side scrolls on a moulded band that supports a small pediment and finial.

At the base of the gable, there is a stone cornice above the main cornice. The first floor has six narrow windows with stone bolection frames and moulded cills. On the ground floor, there are two similar double windows flanking a wide central door, which has a stone eared bolection architrave, a bolection frieze, a moulded cornice, and a broken pediment featuring a central carved cartouche with the date and inscription.

The gable end facing St Edmund's Church Street has a similar design, with two narrow windows and a central chimney, and there is a one-storey wing at the back. The almshouses are arranged in an L-shape around a garden court. Inside the entrance hall, there is an original cartouche with the date. Taylor's Almshouses, along with Frowd's Almshouses located at Nos 26 to 34 (even), form a group.
