Description

The Angel Hotel is an inn with a late 16th-century core range, a 1648 addition, and 20th-century alterations. The east front is colourwashed render, while the rear is coursed rubble with stone dressings. It has gabled stone slate roofs and three stacks, one stone and two brick. The building follows an L-shaped plan, with the original core range to the north and a mid-17th-century addition to the south, alongside a rear service wing. The two-storey east front is divided into two sections: a 3-window range dating back to the 16th century and a 3-gabled-bay addition dated 1648, inscribed "WINIFRED/GOODCHEAP/ALIAS/COWLY". The 16th-century range has 2 and 3-light mullion windows with hoodmoulds; the 1648 wing has 2, 3, and 4-light mullion windows, all similarly styled. Blinds are positioned above the ground floor windows. A 20th-century doorway with double plank doors and glazing is located in the left-hand bay of the 16th-century range, with a further plank door to the right. A former carriage entrance has been blocked and the surrounding wall damaged by a bus shelter.
