Description

A section of the former Swan Inn, now comprising two separate dwellings, was built in the late 16th century and restored in the 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with flush rusticated dressed stone quoins, dressed stone window surrounds, wooden lintels, and a gabled stone slate roof with three stone stacks. Situated parallel to the marketplace, it forms an L-shaped plan with Old Swan House to the rear.

The east front has two storeys and four windows. Number 19, on the right, features a 3-light chamfered cross-mullion window with small leaded panes and a hoodmould on the ground floor to the right, a large 3-light plate glass window with a flush cambered-headed strainer arch above to the left, and a 2-light chamfered mullion window to the upper floor. A glazed 20th-century door is centrally located, with another doorway to the left featuring a Tudor arch and a plank door with a glazed panel. Number 21, on the left, has 3-light late 19th-century wooden cross-mullion windows to the ground floor, each with a flush cambered-headed strainer arch above and stone mullions. The upper floor features a 2-light window to the left and a 5-light cross-mullion window with a hoodmould to the right. A central panelled door has the top two panels glazed.

Internally, Number 19 contains a circular newel staircase, and its roof structure was renewed and heightened in the 19th century. Number 21 has undergone extensive renovation.
