Description

Sutton Mandeville Mill is a late 18th century mill located on the River Nadder, with an attached cottage that dates from the early 18th century. The mill is constructed of Flemish bond brick and features a half-hipped tiled roof. It is a single storey building with a basement and loft, containing two windows and a planked door set in a chamfered wooden case to the right. To the left, there are two 2-light leaded casements, all of which have segmental-headed openings. The basement includes one 2-light casement and a larger segmental-headed opening, while the mill race passes through a square-headed opening. The left side of the mill has a 3-light casement on the main floor, a 2-light casement in the attic, and a larger segmental-headed opening in the basement. The rear features both 2-light and 3-light casements.

Inside, the mill retains its complete machinery for milling flour using water power. This includes a cast-iron water wheel (minus paddles), cast-iron gearing wheels with iron or wooden pegs, two sets of millstones, and wooden equipment such as hoppers and chutes. The attached cottage, which is partly collapsed, has one storey and an attic, with two 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned windows. The right side of the mill, which connects to the cottage, is also partly collapsed as of the survey conducted in March 1985. The mill ceased operations in the 1940s.
