Description

Scarth is a house, possibly from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a Bridgwater tile roof. The building is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout. The east end has coped gables, end stacks, and 12-pane sash windows, with two windows above and two to the left of the door below, and one to the right. The upper sash windows have mid-19th century ashlar coped gables above, similar to those on Murhill House. The door has six flush panels and is set within a 19th century ashlar gabled porch that has chamfered piers and matching responds, along with glazed sides. The L-plan west end includes a one-window range adjoining the main house, featuring an intersecting-glazing-bar sash window on each floor and a 19th century wing extending north with an end stack and various sashes. The 1841 Tithe map indicates that two houses were marked on the site. It is said that the house was built by J. Wiltshire in the mid-18th century.
