Description

A group of eight chest tombs, dating from the mid 18th century to the early 19th century, is located south of the tower of the Church of St Nicholas in Winsley Village. The tombs are made of ashlar stone and are described as follows:

a) The Cornelius Broad monument from the mid 18th century features two fielded plaques on each side, fielded centre and angle piers, and a moulded base and cornice. It commemorates Cornelius Broad, who died in 1757.

b) The Richard Broad monument, dating from the later 18th century, has two shield plaques on each side, fielded angle piers, fluted centre piers, and a moulded cornice. It is dedicated to Richard Broad of Bath, a carpenter who died in 1776.

c) An unidentified monument from the mid 18th century includes two segment-headed plaques on each side, a moulded base and cornice, and a heavy pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over fluted centre and angle piers.

d) The Andrew Blatchley monument, from the early 19th century, has an elongated octagonal plan with a humped top and each side divided into six small plaques. It commemorates Andrew Blatchley, who died in 1825.

e) The Wilkins monument, from the 19th century, is designed in a heavy neo-Grec style with a cross-gabled capstone and corner antefixae. It is dedicated to Sarah Jane Wilkins, who died in 1870.

f) An unidentified monument, located about 3 meters south of the Richard Broad monument and dating from the mid to later 18th century, features two shield plaques and a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over piers with fielded panels and rosettes. It commemorates (?)Margaret Cross.

g) The Dallimore monument, located about 2 meters southwest of the Richard Broad monument and dating from around 1800, has a tall elongated hexagonal plan with a moulded base and cornice and a humped cap. It commemorates Thomas Dallimore, who died in 1799, and John Dallimore, who died in 1813, and features fine lettering.

h) The Mary Broad monument, located about 2 meters south of the Wilkins monument and dating from the mid 18th century, includes two shield plaques and a cornice with a pulvinated frieze that is broken forward over scrolled piers. It is dedicated to Mary Broad.
