Description

The garden wall at Dorothy House Hospice, formerly known as Winsley House, dates back to either 1637 or 1657. It features three limestone talbot statues and has undergone alterations and repairs in the 20th century.

The wall is approximately 120 meters long and about 2 meters high, constructed from random stone rubble with dressed stone used in the later curved sections at the main entrance along Bradford Road. It has flat stone copings throughout. The entrance is highlighted by two stone talbot statues positioned on a flat stone base atop the coping. Another talbot statue is located above a flat-arched stone ashlar doorway further north along Bradford Road, which contains a planked timber door fitted with decorative cast-iron strap hinges. Above this doorway is a small date stone inscribed with '1637' or '1657', though the third number is only partially legible.

The talbot statues, while slightly weathered, are well-defined, depicting the dogs with curly fur and tails resting on their backs. They are shown in an upright position, each wearing a studded collar with an attached chain. During a recent restoration, traces of historic red paint were discovered in the mouth of one of the talbots.
