Description

The Church of St Barnabas is an Anglican church built in the early Gothic style, with its foundation stone dated 17 November 1885. It is constructed from squared rubble stone and features a tiled roof adorned with carved cross finials. The church has a 4.5-bay nave and a 2.5-bay chancel, with no aisles. A gabled north porch leads to a door that has a moulded pointed arch. The nave contains three 3-light trefoil-headed pointed windows, with the central light featuring a single transom. The chancel is equipped with two lancet windows and a geometric Decorated style east window that includes a moulded drip mould. Attached to the south side of the nave is a contemporary church room, which has two 3-light mullioned windows and one 4-light square trefoil-headed window. A flat-roofed 20th-century vestry extension at the southwest is not included in the listing. The west window showcases heavy geometric tracery, and there is a bell cote with a single bell and cross finial on the west gable of the nave.

Inside, the nave features a roof supported by arch-braced collar trusses, with a cross motif positioned between the collar and the ridge. A large blind elliptical arch in the south wall has an inserted door leading to the 20th-century vestry. The door and window surrounds are made of ashlar and are chamfered, while a moulded plaster string course runs below the windows. A plain chamfered pointed arch is located in the center of bay 5. An important feature of the church is the 14th-century stone font at the west end of the nave, which has an octagonal bowl on a cylindrical column and was brought from the Church of St Michael in Melksham.
