Description

Beanacre Old Manor is a manor house with a complex history, dating from the late 14th century to the early 18th century. Initially constructed as an open hall and solar in the late 14th century, it was remodelled in the early 16th century. A chapel was added to the rear around 1500, and an early 18th-century service wing was built to the left. The building is constructed of rubblestone with a stone slate roof, featuring projecting ashlar stacks serving the hall, solar, and chapel.

The plan consists of a hall with wings extending to the sides and rear. The main front features a wooden Medieval doorcase to the left of the hall, accompanied by a three-light wooden mullioned window to the right, separated by a buttress opposing the central truss. Two later gabled dormers are positioned in the roof. A wing to the right, renovated in 1931, has a door to the left and a three-light mullioned window to the right, with a Cotswold-style dormer above. Another gable displays an inserted door and casement above a three-light mullioned window. The service wing to the left of the main entrance presents an early 18th-century facade with a three-window arrangement, incorporating one-light, five-light, and two-light cyma mullioned windows to the ground floor and three two-light windows above.

The garden front features a 4-centred arched door, leading to the chapel with a pointed arched window and a drip mould, alongside a single square-headed casement. An early 18th-century arched oriel window, constructed of timber, sits above the door. A transverse wing adjoining the chapel features a two-light window on the first floor above a 19th-century porched door, with a projecting stack to the right. To the left, set back, is an early 16th-century facade of the 14th-century hall and solar, displaying a two-light arched window to the hall and a four-light arched-headed window with a king mullion and drip mould, featuring carved terminals. Above in the gable of the solar is a two-light arched window with a drip mould and carved terminals. The roof is finished with coping and a saddleback. The hall stack to the right is stepped.

Inside, the two-bay open hall has an arch-braced collar roof with two tiers of wind braces to purlins. A 4-centred arched door sits to the left of a 4-centred arched fireplace. The solar has a roof of similar construction. The chapel features a pointed barrel vaulted roof and a 4-centred arched fireplace, restored in 1931 by Harold Brakspear. The dating of the hall and solar to around 1360 was made by Harold Brakspear, though the arch-braced collar trusses may be 15th century. The property contained significant renovations in 1931 by H. Brakspear.
