Description

Spring Cottage is a detached cottage dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with the left bay being a 17th-century addition. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a thatched roof with brick stacks, forming a T-plan. The cottage is single-storey with an attic and has three windows. There is a planked door located to the left of center, along with two 2-light and two 3-light casement windows. In the attic, there is one 3-light casement set below the raised eaves of the left bay, and two full dormers with coped verges on the right; one dormer contains a 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned window, while the other has a 3-light casement. The roof has a coped verge on the right side. The left return features a blocked chamfered light, and the rear has both 3-light and 2-light casements, along with a 20th-century dormer in the attic. The rear wing to the right includes 2-light and 3-light casements.

Inside, there are two open fireplaces; the northern fireplace has a chamfered lintel with rounded corners on stone jambs, while the southern fireplace has a renewed lintel. The interior also boasts deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops and planked doors with strap hinges. The rear wall, now part of the wing, has a blocked 3-light wooden mullioned window. On the first floor, there is a chamfered wooden doorcase with stops. The four-bay roof features one tier of heavy through purlins, with the center bay being charred and smoke-blackened, indicating that the cottage was originally open to the roof, likely in the 16th century, with the floor being inserted in the 17th century.
