Description
The Grange is a house located in Chippenham Without, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. It is constructed from rubble stone and features a stone-tiled roof, with an ashlar stack at the east end wall of the 18th-century section and two ridge stacks on the 16th-century cross-wing. The building has an L-shaped plan.
The south front range is two storeys high with an attic, featuring a hipped dormer and a two-window arrangement. Above, there are flush cyma-moulded two-light windows, while the ground floor has a door set in a 20th-century porch and a three-light flush cyma-moulded window with a square dripstone below. There is an open lean-to on the east end wall and a lean-to at the rear.
The cross-wing on the east side is one storey with an attic, showcasing a half-hipped south gable. It has a two-light cyma-moulded window in the upper section and a three-light lower window with a square dripstone. The west side features three hipped eaves dormers and four buttresses, with various windows, mostly from the 20th century, including one three-light cyma-moulded window with a square dripstone. There is also a lean-to against the east wall.
Inside, the south end room of the cross-wing has a large Tudor-arched stone fireplace and heavy chamfered and stopped beams. The central room contains a bolection-moulded stone fireplace dating from around 1700. The main range features a Tudor-arched stone fireplace at the east end, although the main stair has been removed.
