Description
This is a late 18th-century building, comprising numbers 2, 3, 4, and 4A, Estcourt Street. It is a symmetrical block constructed of stone, potentially Chilmark stone. The ground floor is rusticated and sits on a projecting plinth, with a string course marking the first floor. Pilasters accentuate the upper floors, and a moulded modillion cornice and blocking course run along the top. A central three-bay projection features a pediment, with the cornice continuing across and over the pediment. The roof is slate-covered. There are seven windows on the upper floors, with the left-hand and central windows being false. These are recessed sash windows, some retaining original glazing bars. Originally, the ground floor featured four windows, now replaced by two tripartite sash windows set within segmental arched recesses. There are two recessed entrances, originally four, with one retaining six panels and a semi-circular fanlight incorporating wreathed and radiating glazing bars. Stone strips flanking the entrances were originally intended to form arched surrounds, and number 3 notably has a projecting keystone. The ground floors of numbers 4 and 4A have been altered with an entirely modern shop front. The building occupies a prominent position, visible across Devizes Green and approached from Southbroom Road, and is considered part of the group of houses listed on Southbroom Road. Numbers 1 to 16 (consecutively) are grouped together.
