Description

Monks House is a row of three cottages from the 17th and 18th centuries that have been converted into two houses and altered around 1960. The building is constructed of rubble stone with a stone slate roof, featuring three ridge stacks and a stack at the south end. It stands two storeys high.

No 189, on the right, dates from the 17th century and was originally double-fronted with end stacks. It has a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullion window with a hoodmould on each floor, positioned on either side of the door. A 20th-century enclosed porch has been added, along with a reused 18th-century two-light window above the door and a matching 20th-century one-window range at the right end, which includes a door and a 2-light window above.

Monks House features a 17th-century one-window cottage to the right, mirroring No 189, with a 3-light ovolo-moulded mullion window and hoodmould on each floor, and a door to the right. There is a stack to the left. To the left of Monks House is an 18th-century double-fronted house with flush mullion windows, a 3-light window on the ground floor, and a 2-light window above. The centre of this house previously had a door, now obscured by a large 20th-century gabled projection. There is also a garage addition at the south end.

Inside, No 189 features chamfered and stopped beams and a large timber-lintel fireplace at the south end. The north end chimney, which is now internal, originally had a curved outside stack.
