Description

The stable at Bratton House is a mid-18th century building with 19th century additions. It is constructed from Flemish bond brick and features chamfered stone quoins. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, having a coped verge on the left and a hip on the right. The stable is designed in an L-plan and is a single-storey structure with a five-bay range from the 18th century.

The central entrance consists of double panelled doors set within a beaded stone architrave. There are two blocked windows on the left and one on the right, along with a four-panelled door that includes a transom light. A string course runs along the building, and there is a two-brick plat band with five oculi in stone surrounds above, the leftmost of which features a clock face, while the central oculus is larger. The eaves cornice is moulded in stone.

Attached to the right is a 19th century carriage house, which has two segmental-headed openings with keystones. The left opening contains a 20th century garage door, while the right has an inserted three-light casement window. There is also a planked door to the right and two three-light casements on the first floor, with a stepped brick eaves course.

Additionally, there is a former late 19th century chapel at right angles to the stable, which has been converted into a garage. This chapel features 20th century garage doors and plate glass sashes in a single-storey extension to the right. The west gable end includes a cross window. Inside the stable, the original timber stalls and loose boxes remain, along with a brick floor. The former chapel boasts an arch-braced roof from the 19th century.
