Description
No 1 Melbourne Street is a detached house that dates back to around 1621, as indicated by the relief carving on the lintel above the door. The house has been altered in the 19th century and is constructed of rubble stone with timber framing at the rear. It features a thatched roof with an axial brick stack and has a baffle-entry design.
The building is two stories high with three windows across the front. The central entrance consists of a planked door beneath a carved lintel, which is sheltered by a 20th-century brick porch. On either side of the door are 4-light wooden mullioned casements. The first floor has a central single light flanked by wooden ovolo-mullioned casements.
To the right, there is a range that was rebuilt in the late 19th century, featuring a central planked door with segmental-headed 4-light casements on either side and a 2-light casement on the first floor. The right return is rendered and has a single-light casement on the first floor. The left return was rebuilt in stretcher bond brick around 1950 and includes steel casements.
At the rear, there is a 3-light wooden mullioned casement and a 2-light steel casement to the right, with a 3-light and 2-light diamond leaded casement on the first floor. The left range retains restored timber framing, a chamfered surround to a planked door, and two eyebrow dormers with 2-light casements, along with a 20th-century lean-to extension.
Inside the east range, you will find deeply chamfered beams with bar stops, an open fireplace with lozenge decoration on a partly cut lintel, and stone jambs. The doors are planked and set in chamfered or ovolo-moulded doorcases, with winding stairs located on the south side of the stack. The first floor features an open fireplace with a cambered lintel and an exposed timber-framed wall between the two ranges. The west range retains timber-framed partitions on the first floor, planked doors, and deep chamfered beams, along with a large open fireplace with a cambered lintel set on restored stone jambs in the ground floor west gable.
