Description
The Bratton War Memorial is a stone structure located on a small green in front of Melbourne House, along the main road through Bratton. It features a three-stepped square base topped by a square, tapered plinth, from which a tall Celtic cross rises. The outline of the cross shaft and wheel-head is incised with plain lines on the front face to highlight its form.
The principal dedicatory inscription on the front face of the cross shaft begins with "TO THE/ GLORY/ OF/ GOD/ AND" and continues below on the plinth with "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN/ FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE WAR OF 1914-1918." The rear of the plinth bears the inscription "A THANKSGIVING FROM/ W. N. & L. J. DIGGLE OF BRATTON HOUSE." Additionally, the front face of the top step is inscribed with "AS DYING AND BEHOLD WE LIVE." The names of those commemorated are incised into the side faces of the plinth and top step.
The memorial is accessed via a flagged path from the road, and the green surrounding the memorial is enclosed by a chain suspended on low timber posts.
