Description

West Street Farmhouse is a late 17th-century farmhouse with an earlier core, constructed partly of rubble stone and partly with an ashlar front. It features a stone slate roof, end stacks, and a ridge stack located between two sections of the building. The farmhouse has two storeys and an attic.

The left section, which is ashlar fronted, has three windows with cyma-moulded recessed mullion windows and hoodmoulds; there are three lights on each side and a two-light window in the center above a former door, now replaced with a 20th-century window that also has a hoodmould. The ground floor window on the right has had its mullions removed for a 20th-century window. Incorporated into the wall are bands of 12th-century chevron moulding and six carved plaques, including five floral roundels and one shield featuring a rampant lion, believed to represent the Mompesson arms.

The right section of the farmhouse is built of rubble stone and has similar two-light and three-light windows above, each with hoodmoulds. There are two 20th-century ground floor windows with original hoodmoulds on either side of a door set in a flush moulded surround, which is part of a 19th-century picturesque timber-framed and roughcast porch. At the rear, there is a northeast wing that is roughcast with a stone slate roof.

In the 17th century, the house was known as Cockerells or Cottrills. It was purchased by W. Alexander in 1687, who likely rebuilt the house before his death in 1724.
