Description
39 and 40 George Street are two houses built around 1831. They are two storeys high and constructed from ashlar Bath stone. The buildings feature a projecting plinth and a string course at the first floor level, along with a moulded stone cornice at the flat eaves. The low-pitched hipped slate roof completes the design. Each house has four windows on the first floor. Number 40, the right-hand house, includes a central panel and a slightly later shop front with a modern door framed by Doric panelled pilasters on the ground floor. The left-hand house has two windows on the left side and a similar shop front on the right. It also features a return front with four windows, including one blind panel with a sash rebate on each floor, and a box porch. There are arrowhead railings with dog rails extending for five yards to the street.
