Description

Castle Lodge is a detached house that originally served as the lodge for Rood Ashton House. It was built in the early 19th century for the Long family. The structure is made of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and features stone stacks. Its design reflects a Gothic fantasy style to complement Rood Ashton House.

The building is two stories high with an attic and has four windows. The central entrance consists of double doors set within a large chamfered Tudor-arched carriage opening. To the left of the entrance is a leaded oriel window, and to the right is a lancet window. On the first floor, there is a 2-light mullioned casement window with a hoodmould to the left, a lancet window to the right, and another 2-light mullioned casement window above the archway, which features the heraldic Arms of Longs carved on three shields.

A cylindrical turret is located at the right corner, adorned with lancet windows and a corbelled battlemented parapet. To the left side, there is a square tower with lancet windows and a blind cross arrow loop, also topped with a corbelled battlemented parapet. Additionally, there are single and two-storey bays to the left that include mullioned casement windows. This lodge may have been constructed around the time of the 1836 alterations to the main house by the architect Thomas Hopper, and it is possible that he designed it.
