Description

The remains of a country house stand in Rood Ashton Park, dating to 1808 and originally designed by Jeffry Wyattville for Richard Godolphin Long. Thomas Hopper made alterations in 1836, and the larger part of the house was demolished in the 1970s. The surviving north wing is constructed of limestone ashlar with concrete tiled or flat roofs, featuring octagonal panelled ashlar stacks. The architecture is in a late Gothic style. The west front retains a three-story square corner tower to the right, with two stone roll-moulded cross windows with hoodmoulds on the ground, first, and second floors. Octagonal corner pilasters rise to panelled turrets linked by a battlemented parapet with moulded coping. To the left of the tower is a single-story bay with a large three-light mullioned and transomed window with a hoodmould; above it is a gable with a quatrefoil and an apex stack. A two-story bay is located to the left of this. The rear of the building now has 20th-century casements, while a 20th-century kitchen incorporates reused windows and masonry. The interior was gutted during the 1970s, and all fittings were replaced, with some subsequently reused. The house occupies a prominent hilltop location within a landscaped park, situated on the site of an earlier house. A new drive and tree planting were designed by Sir John Nasmyth in 1840. A lodge by T.H. Wyatt is located adjacent to the Church of St John the Evangelist at the south entrance to the park.
