Description

The Rest is a late 17th- to early 18th-century cottage, originally a single heated bay with a gable stack. It is situated on the east side of Northbrook in Market Lavington. The building is constructed of colourwashed greensand rubble, lined with chalkstone, and has a thatched roof. A second bay, now a kitchen, was added behind the original stack in matching materials. The front features a boarded door with a shaped head, sheltered by a thatched canopy, and small timber casement windows with small panes. A 20th-century bathroom extension was added to the right gable. Inside, the living room contains an unshaped spine beam resting on a chalkstone open fireplace with a replaced timber lintel. Evidence suggests an oven was removed when a doorway was broken through, facilitating the addition of the second bay. The roof structure consists of round pole timber and elementary pole collars. The cottage provides an interesting example of a surviving modest dwelling.
