Description

Bank House, formerly known as Marlborough House, is an early 18th-century building located on the north side of Westbury Market Place. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features two storeys plus an attic, arranged in five bays. The building has wide eaves and a moulded cornice beneath a steep hipped roof covered with old tiles. Notable architectural details include chamfered quoins, a projecting plinth with a moulded stone top, and a moulded stone string course above the ground floor windows.

The façade includes two tall, narrow gabled dormer windows with glazing bar sashes, as well as additional glazing bar sashes set in stone surrounds with beaded inner edges. A modern glazed door has been inserted in a moulded stone surround, which is topped with a carved stone shell hood supported by carved stone scroll brackets.

Inside, there is a contemporary staircase featuring alternate twisted and turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and a cut string with cut spandrels. The staircase also has wide scroll steps at the bottom and reeded end columns, resembling the staircase found in Edgar House, which dates from around 1720 to 1740.

To the left of the main building, there is a single-storey extension with two windows and a wide door that has an overlight featuring interesting circular designs; this extension is likely modern. Bank House is part of the Market Place group and also connects with the West End.
