Description

The Old Rectory is a house that was originally built around 1830 for Reverend Edward Caulfeild, on the site of a rectory from 1743. The building is rendered with painted stone quoins and has a slated roof. It stands two storeys high and features three principal bays, with a wider recessed central bay that contains the entrance, flanked by lateral bays that project slightly forward as wings. To the left is a service wing, which has been extended to include stabling and outbuildings.

The entrance features wide paired half-glazed doors with margin glazed side lights and over lights, all set within a wide Tuscan portico. The first floor has twelve-paned sash windows and flanking six-paned sashes above. The wings have early 20th-century full-height glazing on the ground floor with blind boxes above, and paired six-paned sashes on the upper floor. The eaves are adorned with paired modillion brackets. The roof is hipped and has two brick stacks. The service wing includes a parapet and twelve-pane sashes, along with a glazed lean-to across the ground floor.

Inside, the hall features a staircase with two slender turned balusters for each bracketed tread, and the handrail is scrolled at the end. The dining room in the left wing has a marble chimneypiece, while the drawing room to the right features a fire surround typical of the 18th century.
