Description
Foxhanger House is a house built around 1830, featuring a combination of stucco and red brick with slate low-pitched roofs. The building has two and three storeys. The main range is stuccoed with a hipped valley roof, a central stack, and overhanging eaves. The front facing the road has two storeys, with two upper 12-pane windows, a ground floor cambered-head 16-pane sash window, and a 12-pane sash window. To the right, there is a six-panel door with an overlight and a tent porch.
The garden front has three storeys, with alterations made to the ground floor. It includes a 12-pane and a 16-pane window on the first floor, and a 9-pane and a 16-pane window above. The south return features a former door that has been converted into a window, with a 16-pane window above and a 12-pane window on the second floor. The south end block is taller and has a south end stack; it is stuccoed on the road side but made of red brick on the garden side. This side has an arcaded ground floor with two glazing bar sashes and sunk panels below, along with a door to the right, gauged brick heads, and ashlar imposts. There is a large 12-pane window on the first floor and a 9-pane window above. A single-storey range is attached to the south. The house is said to have been built for John Blackwell, who was the chief engineer of the Kennet and Avon Canal Company from 1806 to 1841.
