Description

The Melsome Monument is a chest tomb located about 6 meters east-south-east of the Isaac Monument at the north-east corner of the churchyard of the Church of St. Bartholomew. This monument dates from the later 18th century and is constructed of ashlar stone. The south side features an oval plaque adorned with cherub heads in the upper spandrels, with ornate floral drops on each side. The corners are designed with fluted balusters. The north plaque is plain and fielded. The monument has a moulded base and cornice, with a fluted frieze that is broken forward over the center, and rosettes are present in the angles of the frieze. The inscription on the south side commemorates John Melsome, who died in 1799.
