Description
26 Castle Street is a house that was originally a lodge, built in the 18th century and altered in the mid-19th century in a vernacular style. It is constructed of limestone rubble and features gable stacks with a pantile roof. The building has a single-depth, two-room plan with a later rear wing, and it stands two storeys high with an attic, presenting a two-window range to the street. The left-hand gable is coped and has moulded kneelers, while the right-hand gable has a large decapitated exterior stack. The entrance, which includes a four-panel door, is located to the left of the stack and is sheltered by a 20th-century porch. The front elevation facing the road has timber lintels above two- and three-light wood-mullioned windows, which are fitted with 19th-century casements. There are also two late 20th-century hipped dormers on the roof. The rear gabled extension has been partly rebuilt and features a first-floor label mould. The interior has not been inspected. This building was formerly the lodge to Castlefield House.
