Description

Nos 85 and 86 are a pair of semi-detached cottages that were originally a detached house built in the mid-18th century. The structure is made of rubble stone and features a tiled two-span roof with gabled end brick stacks. It consists of two parallel ranges and is two stories high with two windows on the front, which contain sash windows. The central entrance has a planked door with a gabled canopy, flanked by 16-pane sash windows. Above the door is a large moulded stone panel displaying a high relief carving of the Ludlow heraldic arms, with 12-pane sash windows on either side on the first floor. The right side of the building has a planked door and a blocked sash window, with a beaded stone case above on the first floor. The rear features a planked door and two-light casements, along with 12-pane sashes in beaded cases on the right. Inside, the cottages have chamfered beams and either planked doors or doors with two fielded panels. The rear range is a late 18th-century addition to the front range, which was likely refenestrated in the 19th century. The Ludlow family owned significant estates in the Deverills from the 14th century, and after marrying into the Coker family around 1650, they sold the estate to the Duke of Marlborough in 1738. Thomas Coker is believed to have moved into this house from Hill Deverill Manor in 1737 and placed the Ludlow arms above the door.
