Description
The Old School is a former village school, now closed, dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone with a tiled roof and features a brick stack. The building has a small L-plan layout and is single storey. A projecting gabled porch with a planked door and strap hinges is located at the angle of the 'L'. To the left gable, there is a 2-light pointed plate tracery window with a hoodmould, while the right gable has a 3-light pointed plate tracery window, also with a hoodmould. Both gables are adorned with quatrefoils and coped verges, and the right gable features a decorated cross finial. The rear of the building has one 3-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement. The left return includes a pointed doorway and an external stack. The interior was not accessible during the survey in July 1985, as it is currently undergoing conversion to a dwelling. This building is a good example of a simple village school that incorporates Gothic and vernacular design elements, situated on the approach to the Church of St. Alfred the Great.
