Description

The barn at Manor Farm is a Grade II* listed structure, likely dating from the 16th century. It features a rubble stone plinth approximately 1.9 meters high, supporting timber-framed walls that are clad with weatherboarding and topped with a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched. The barn consists of seven bays, with the central three bays supported by base crucks, while the outer bays are aisled.

On the north side, there is a large raking porch with double planked doors, and early 19th century lean-to extensions on either side that have Welsh slate roofs. The south side includes a blocked cart entry, stable doors, and shuttered windows, while the left return has an inserted opening with double planked doors.

An unusual feature of the barn is its arrangement of bays, which avoids aisle posts in the central bays by using two raised base cruck trusses that are arch-braced to the main collar. Clasped purlins are supported by upper collars, and there is curved windbracing to the purlins and arcade plates. Each of the three flanking bays has two trusses with aisle posts that support arcade plates and tie-beams, maintaining the same arrangement of clasped purlins and two tiers of curved windbracing throughout, along with curved bracing from aisle posts to tie beams. Notably, the east of the two cruck trusses has wattle holes on the soffits of the collar and bracing, indicating that it was once a closed truss.
