Description
Tennyson House is a farm cottage that has been converted into a school boarding house. It dates from the early 18th century and was extended in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of random rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with gable end stone stacks that have moulded cappings. It is two stories high with an attic and has five windows across its front.
The central entrance consists of a planked door set in a trellised porch. To the left, there are three-light and two-light chamfered mullioned casements, while to the right, there are two three-light mullioned casements. On the first floor, there are five two-light mullioned casements, with the end bays being 19th-century additions. The roof is adorned with four hipped attic dormers, each featuring two-light casements. The right side of the building has a 19th-century casement window set in an arched stone surround.
At the rear, there is a gabled stair turret in the center and 19th-century outshuts on either side. Inside, the cottage includes winding stairs leading to the attic, chamfered beams, and four-panelled and planked doors. Attached to the rear, facing the road, is a gateway made from reused 18th-century mouldings, likely sourced from an architrave or entablature of a demolished 18th-century house that was replaced by the current Stonar School in the 1770s.
