Description

The Catherine Wheel Public House, located at 31 and 33 Milford Street, is a building with origins dating back to the 15th century. Originally a single house, number 31 was recased as a separate dwelling in the early 19th century. It features three storeys of stock brick with an overhanging first floor, a parapet, and a moulded cornice that is broken forward over a canted bay window. The windows have an architrave surround and a plank apron, but there is a modern shop front. Number 33, known as The Catherine Wheel, has been entirely refronted in the current century with stucco, a brick surround, and a plinth, along with a bracketed cornice. It has modern casements and a central door topped with a pedimented hood, although it retains an old tiled roof. There is a passageway to the left of the building. At the rear, there is an east wing with a jettied first floor, mathematical tiles, and three 19th-century sash windows. Inside, remnants of the roof structure can be found, including a street block of three bays, a partition truss, and a hammerbeam truss over an open hall. There are also remains of a 16th-century King strut and curved braces. Numbers 19A to 39 (odd) form a group with this building.
