Description
The Pippin is a late 17th-century farmhouse, now divided into two separate dwellings, located in Calne. It is constructed of limestone rubble with a double-Roman pantile roof and a prominent ridge stack to the left of the front door. Originally designed with a central through-passage and a rear right wing connected at a corner and gabled at each end, the building is now divided into two front sections; number 17 occupies the left half, and number 19 the remaining section. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics, displaying a symmetrical two-window front. 19th-century three-light casement windows are at eaves level to the first floor, while the ground floor features three-light windows with a central sliding sash. A 20th-century dormer is present on number 17.
Inside number 17, the stack of the open fire, which has a Tudor-arched oak lintel, backs onto the central passage. A chamfered axial beam is also visible, featuring heart-shaped stops. A corner to the front right contains a recessed area lined with wood, complete with shaped shelves and simple shell-like coving which dates to the early 18th century. The first-floor room, originally a single space, is now divided and includes a ceiling with varied chamfers and stops, suggesting re-used timber. Exposed pegged box framing is visible at the right gable end. The two-bay attic has boxed-in rafters and purlins.
