Description
This is a 17th-century house, remodelled in the mid- to late 19th century, located in Calne. It is constructed of coursed, squared limestone rubble with large ashlar gable stacks and a slate roof. The house follows a central-entry plan with two rooms. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a two-window front. A late 19th-century timber gabled porch is present, along with three-light windows with cambered heads and casements, and two gabled dormers. Squared stone detailing is found around and above the doorway, and on the left-hand gable. The diagonally-set flues in the stacks are topped with weathered coping, with a particularly large and heavily built external stack on the right. The interior is reported to contain a central staircase and three large roof trusses with tenoned purlins. It is noted that the house was built on the site of a 16th-century workhouse, and that the right-hand gable may incorporate some earlier stonework.
