Description

55 and 57 The Pippin is a house that has been divided into two dwellings, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble and features a steeply-pitched roof that has recently been slated, though it was originally thatched. There are brick stacks at the gable ends. Each cottage has a single-unit plan, with No. 55 on the left being a two-window range, while No. 57 is a one-window range.

The building is two storeys high. The timber lintels and first-floor windows are positioned at eaves level. The entrance to No. 55 is located on the left return, where some timber insertions at the corners support the rubblestone. The door opening to the right has been narrowed to fit a 19th-century planked door with an iron knocker. To the left of the door, there is a projecting stack that is slightly corbelled out at first-floor level, which features a two-light 18th-century leaded casement window with 20th-century glass. The west facade of No. 55, which faces The Pippin, has two 19th-century two-light casement windows without glazing bars on each floor, with a vertical joint between them suggesting that No. 57 was once symmetrical.

No. 57 has a 20th-century door to the left and a 20th-century two-light casement window on each floor, along with a half-submerged basement window that remains. The interior of No. 55 includes a ground floor room that is stone-flagged, with an open fire located in the rear left corner. There is a studded wall to the right and a chamfered crossbeam with slots and holes, likely reused. The 20th-century staircase has been repositioned, while the first floor features elm boards and two partly exposed pegged A-frame trusses.
