Description

The Castle Hotel is a late 18th-century building designed in an L shape, with a return block facing the main gates of St Mary's Churchyard. The corner of the hotel is canted, and it stands two storeys tall with an attic, constructed of red brick and topped with a mansard slate roof. The first floor features twelve recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills, while the ground floor has ten such windows. On the first floor, four of the windows on the right side and three on the ground floor, including those at the corner and on the return front, are adorned with keystones.

The main entrance is located in the second bay to the left of the corner, featuring a recessed door with a central light, two upper moulded panels, and two lower flush panels, all set within an architrave surround beneath a stone Doric porch supported by two columns, with wall pilasters and an entablature. A secondary entrance on the return front has a recessed door with two moulded panels and a glazed rest, topped with a rectangular fanlight, flat brick arch, and keystone similar to the windows.

At the corner of the hotel, there is a wrought iron sign bracket with scroll ornamentation. To the north, there are two stable blocks that are contemporary with the hotel, although the left-hand block may be slightly later. The right-hand stable block is also two storeys high, made of red brick, and features a mansard slate roof and a stone band between the storeys. It has four tall recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars on the first floor, while the ground floor includes two elliptical arched stable entries—one of which is blocked with a window—and three small arched windows, two flanking and one central, all with keystones. The left-hand stable block is similarly two storeys and constructed of red brick, featuring a full-width gabled front, two recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars, segmental brick arches with keystones, and an elliptical arched stable entry also with a keystone.

The Castle Hotel, along with No 48 and Brownstone House, forms an important group at the south end of New Park Street.
