Description

Great Porch House, located at 8 Monday Market Street, is an early 15th-century building that was originally part of a larger property extending to a courtyard at the back. The former wings at the rear were demolished in 1954. The house has two storeys and a timber frame, with a 19th-century brick front for Nos 6 and 7. The gable of No 8 features bargeboards, and the first floor displays joist ends from a former overhang along with medieval exposed timber framing, which includes slightly curved bracing in the gable. Each floor has one sash window with intact glazing bars, and there is a small three-light wooden frame window with cusped lights on the first floor, alongside later brick infilling and a plain door.

Between Nos 7 and 8, there is an archway leading to the Great Porch, which has a moulded beam above and carved flowers. The gabled rear elevation of No 6 shows exposed timber framing. The building features an impressive arch-braced roof framework with massive collar beams and curved wind braces that remain intact throughout. Four of the original six carved heads decorating the wall plates are still present, though one is damaged. Between the roof timbers, there are paintings on plaster, divided into eight sections, each featuring three large crudely painted roses surrounded by green leaves. The ground floor front room of No 8 has panelling, and the building may have ecclesiastical origins. Nos 6 to 15 on the street form a group.
