Description

The Retreat is an early to mid-19th century house, with an extension dating from circa 1864. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with brick gables and lateral stacks, and has a roof covered with stone slate and tile. The house has a double-depth plan and two storeys plus an attic. The original left-hand gable has a gable stack, and the later, wider right-hand gable features a doorway with a tented canopy and a 20th-century glazed door, flanked by lateral stacks. The windows have cambered heads; those in the earlier gable are narrower and include two ground-floor, one first-floor, and one attic window. The later gable has wider windows, all with plate-glass sashes incorporating margin panes within exposed boxes. The interior has been altered; the entrance hall contains a right-hand staircase.
