Description

Fidler’s Cottage, also known as Violet Cottage, is an 18th-century cottage situated on the west side of Blackboard Lane in Urchfont. The cottage is constructed of Flemish brickwork with stone foundation sills, and has a thatched roof. It is two storeys and an attic in height, and originally comprised two bays: a wide, heated living room with a gable stack, and a narrower bay containing the entrance. The front door is boarded with a glazed panel, and is sheltered by a flat canopy supported on brackets. A plat band runs around the building. Casement windows are present, with three lights in the wider bay, and segmental brick arches over the ground floor windows. The roof is hipped to the left. A lean-to was added to the rear in the later 18th century, under a continuous roof slope, and is rendered on its rear face. A weatherboarded and pantiled lean-to extension is present on the west side.
