Description

The Baptist Church and attached shop is a particular Baptist chapel and former school room, now functioning as shop premises. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of coursed rubble stone with a tiled roof and a brick stack on the right. The chapel features four windows, while the schoolroom has one window. The chapel includes three tall round-arched leaded windows on the left and a planked door on the right, which has a round-arched leaded window above it that lights the gallery. The two-storey schoolroom has a six-panelled door with a flat wooden hood and a 16-pane flush sash window to the right, along with a round-arched fixed window on the first floor. Both the chapel and schoolroom have chamfered rusticated quoins and a moulded stone eaves cornice.

At the rear of the chapel, there are three square-headed leaded windows on the right, and a 2-light casement window on both the ground and first floors of the gallery end on the left. The schoolroom also has 16-pane sash windows on both floors. Inside the chapel, there is a 19th-century south gallery supported by cast-iron composite columns, a pine gallery balustrade, and 19th-century pews that include some reused 18th-century panelling. The chapel features an 18th-century octagonal pulpit with fielded panelling. On the north wall, there are marble tablets commemorating John Clark, who died in 1803, and Joseph Thresher, who died in 1842, both of whom were ministers of this chapel. The chapel was founded in the 1660s and is associated with the Adlam family of Bull Mill. It ceased to be used for worship in the early 1980s.
