Description
The Baptist Chapel and schoolroom, dated 1832, is located on High Street in Lode. A plaque on the gable end marks its date of construction. The two-storey porch at the front and the ministers room at the rear were likely added in 1855. The building is constructed of grey brick and features a low pitch slate roof. The principal elevation has a gable end divided into two stages with three recessed bays, each topped with an elliptical arch. The two outer bays contain five hung sashes with glazing bars, and the lower windows still have their original shutters. The center bay of the original facade is now hidden by the two-storey porch, which is also made of grey brick and slate, featuring a pedimented gable end and a sawtooth cornice. There are round-headed arches to the recessed bay in the gable end, as well as to a first-floor window and the doorway. A tall, tapering chimney stack for the schoolroom was likely added in 1855 as well. The ministers room is a single storey, constructed of grey brick and slate, with a brick dated 1855 at one end. The chapel yard wall, gate piers, wrought iron gates, and arched lamp holder are contemporary with the chapel. Inside, the chapel features a two-stage pulpit with fluted pilasters at the corners, along with a gallery and pews, all likely from 1855. The schoolroom is separated from the main chapel by a series of original screens that can be raised to accommodate larger congregations.
