Description
This is a Baptist chapel, initially built between 1736 and 1737, with alterations in the late 18th century. It was significantly heightened, re-roofed, and had its window heads renewed in 1802, and an early 19th-century schoolroom and vestry were added. The chapel is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with limestone dressings, and has a slate roof, hipped on the left side. It has a two-window front. The ground floor features four-panel doors with overlights to the left and right of a central twelve-pane sash window. Matching sashes are on the first floor, either side of a late 19th-century clock face set within a circular moulded stone surround. The doors and windows are topped with stone lintels. An attached, single-storeyed schoolroom and vestry, one window wide and slightly set back, has a similar door and sashes. The rear elevation has six hornless sash windows, some with twelve panes, others with eighteen. The left return features an oculus in the gable wall, while the right return has horned sash windows.
Inside, there is a gallery supported by slender columns and plain benches throughout, each with planked backs. A baptistry for full immersion is positioned forward of where the communion table stands.
