Description
Number 28 on Bridewell Street is a building dating from around 1830 to 1840. It has three storeys and cellars, constructed of red brick on a stone plinth. The roof is a low-pitched gable end covered with slate, featuring flanking chimneys. There is a flat moulded eaves cornice with header dentils spaced approximately 9 inches apart.
The upper floors have five windows, with the center window on the second floor being blind. The ground floor has four windows, all of which are recessed two-light casements with marginal glazing. The windows have stepped stucco voussoir heads, except for the second-floor windows, which simply have keystones.
The central door is recessed and features four fielded panels and two flush panels, set in a plain stone surround beneath a well-designed Tuscan porch. This porch has columns at the front and pilasters against the wall, with entasis, and an entablature above. There are also two cellar windows with grills.
Numbers 23 to 31 on Bridewell Street form a group with this building.
