Description

Old Smithy Cottage is a pair of cottages, originally forming a row, now combined into a single house. It dates to the 17th century and has been altered later. The construction combines timber framing with external walls of flint and brick, and a thatched roof. The building is one storey with an attic. It originally comprised two bays, built of flint with a left-hand gable stack. It was extended to the right by one bay in brick and laced flint, also with a gable stack, and further extended to the left with a stack. A 20th-century loggia has been added to the left end. The ground floor has 20th-century doors and windows, and four-pane casement windows with glazed sidelights to swept dormers. The thatched roof is half-hipped at both ends. Brick stacks are present. A 20th-century service room has been incorporated at the rear.
