Description
The walls enclosing the Italian Garden, along with a fountain, date from around 1825 to 1850. The low dwarf wall surrounds three sides of the garden and features alternating lead statues and vases on pedestals. The west end is apsed and includes a central entrance. In front of the loggia, there are steps with scrolls leading to the piers. A significant amount of statuary was provided by the firm of Austen & Seeley between 1845 and 1851, including accurate copies of 17th and 18th century sculptures, particularly lead groups of putti that are replicas of those made by Nost in the early 18th century. At the center of the garden stands a fine Renaissance fountain, which has three stages and is set in a circular moulded basin.
