Description
The loggia to the west of Wilton Park, built around 1826, features a simple Italianate design with three arches, possibly created by Wyattville and Sir Richard Westmacott. An estimate for the work was signed on March 23, 1826, by Thomas Strong. It is constructed in ashlar against a high ashlar garden wall that continues the modillion block cornice of the loggia. The design includes impost moulding and architraves for the arches, a blocking course, and outer spandrels adorned with carved panels. The panels below depict tritons on the left and Europa on the right, referencing de Caux's grotto.
Access to the interior is via two moulded steps, with the lower step serving as a plinth for the loggia. Inside, there is a moulded cornice and a round-headed window on each side above an open balustrade. The rear exit features double doors with six carved panels, flanked by antique marble columns topped with smaller antique Corinthian caps. There are also two inset marble reliefs—tritons on the left and the birth of Venus on the right, again from de Caux's grotto. The loggia includes side benches and numerous other marbles and reliefs. It is flanked by ramped quadrant walls and panelled returns, approached by a series of moulded steps from Wyatt's west terrace and the Italian Garden, with the approach steps being interrupted by two solid piers.
